Sandwich franchise giant, Subway, has removed ham and bacon from its menu at over 200 locations and replaced it with halal-friendly alternatives in order to appease their Muslim customers. It has been confirmed that turkey ham will be used as a substitute, and all the meats will be prepared according to halal guidelines. The sandwich franchise has explained that there is a high demand to comply with animal welfare guidelines, as well as complying with “the views of religious communities.”
The Arabic the word halal means ‘permitted’ or ‘lawful’ and defines anything that is allowed or lawful according to the Qur’an. The process in which halal meat is procured is deemed “inhumane” by many animal activists, because the methods they use to slaughter the animals requires them to slit the throat of the animals while they are fully conscious. In Britain, it is illegal to butcher an animal without stunning it prior to its death to prevent unnecessary suffering. However, there is a religious exception when it comes to meat being prepared by either Muslims or Jews.
Some halal butchers practice pre-stunning, however this is forbidden by many Islamic scholars. A Subway spokeswoman told MailOnline all halal meat served in the participating branches is from animals who were stunned prior to slaughter. She said:
‘The growing popularity of the Subway chain with the diverse multicultural population across the UK and Ireland means we have to balance the values of many religious communities with the overall aim of improving the health and welfare standards of animals. We put a programme into place in 2007, to ensure that the population demographic is taken into account when new store openings are considered in order that we meet consumer demand in each location.”
Its only a matter of time before this happens here in the U.S. Slowly but surely we are getting to the point where halal-friendly lifestyles take over everything that we are used to as Americans.
